Episode 04 | Megan Yelaney: Community, Hands Down, Has Been the Lifeline.

Everyone pivots. If you are an entrepreneur, you know that pivoting is part of the life cycle of owning a business. In this episode, we talk to Megan Yelaney, a successful online business coach who pivoted from the world of health and fitness network marketing to online business coaching. The pivot, for Megan, was the realization of what she loved the most about her business and following the passion that lead her to where she is today.

During our conversation, Megan provides great advice on how to ensure your pivot is leading you in the direction that will help you find your success. Somewhere between finding what you loved as a child, serving your clients and doing what you love is where your success lies. She talks about how to find your “Secret Sauce” in business and is the differentiator between you and everyone else.

You’re Not Alone, Even When You’re a One-Woman Show

If you hadn’t noticed, the biggest thing that we support, both here and on the podcast, is community.  We know how, initially, becoming an entrepreneur or solopreneur can feel very isolating. Generally, taking the leap into a self-made business can feel like a solo journey and a lot of times no one truly understands the changes you’re going through. In the beginning, it can feel like you’re a one-woman, show.

If you are breaking into new territory, creating something new and innovative, or carving out a name for your goods and services, it can feel like you’re walking the path alone. This sense of isolation can be overwhelming and could even cause some depression. (I am speaking from experience here.) But the truth is you are not alone! There are plenty of resources and a great community of other entrepreneurs and/or solopreneurs waiting to connect and support you. You just need to go out and join them!

Here is a list of places you might find a community to support you:

Service organizations love entrepreneurs

You might be delivering a service or selling a product that is one of a kind in your area, but there are other business owners that you can connect with on a personal or professional level. Many service organizations are made up of business owners and entrepreneurs who are also looking for a community, they just don’t know it. Though your business may be unrelated to theirs, the common thread of being a business owner is universal.

Clubs and associations love entrepreneurs

Regardless of what you are selling, there is likely an association, club or group that you can join. This can be virtual or brick-and-mortar. Finding associations and becoming part of their organization can add to your credibility, and offer resources, and support for your journey. Research appropriate associations that you can join and enhance your entrepreneurial experience.

Join us inside the It Takes A Village Facebook Community

Create a community of your own

If you feel isolated and truly want to connect, it might be a great opportunity to create your own community. Resources like MeetUp.com or Facebook can be an excellent way to create and host specialized groups. Whether your group is directly related to the goods and services you provide or tied to a concept, activity, or common interest, you can determine the parameters and build a like-minded group of people to engage with.

Still looking?

Join the It Takes A Village Facebook Community

Being an entrepreneur can feel isolating, but you aren’t alone. Episode 03 | Kelly L. Gabel: Business Owners are NOT One Size Fits All

STC Co-Host Kelly Gabel is in the hot seat this episode! It is always amazing to sit down and find out new things about people you know and love. The opportunity to interview Kelly was a lot of fun and eye-opening! She is articulate, smart, and really knows her tech – even if she can’t fix my cell phone.

Kelly is a multi-passionate entrepreneur who runs the show solo! This is why she is so dedicated to empowering other female entrepreneurs to be able to know and understand the basics of business tech. Kelly is proof that being a “solopreneur” doesn’t have to be hard. Especially when you have community support and have your tech stack simplified. Listen to this episode and learn more about Kelly and how she felt alone and had very little support to finding her niche and her success through community.

Episode 02 | Joelene Mills: Don’t Get Stuck in Someday

Messy action is the only way to ensure you don’t get stuck in “someday”. Even after having a very successful wedding photography business, where she was shooting 69+ Weddings per year, she still ended up stuck in “someday” when it came to her coaching business. Listen to Joelene tell it like it is, as she was stuck in the “someday I will…” phase of running her business and how community helped her understand she doesn’t have to go it alone.

How To Start and Stick To a New Habit

Quote from James Clear, Author of Atomic Habits for the STC Blog Post: 4 Tips How To Start and Stick To a New Habit

In the ITAV Mastermind meeting a couple of weeks ago, we talked about forming new habits and you bet your bottom James Clear and his book Atomic Habits came up. We all have times in our lives when we intentionally want to change our behaviour for the better and create new habits for ourselves. This could be getting in the habit of eating healthier and drinking more water. Or it could be moving more and taking the dog for a daily walk. Or it could be work and business related, or spiritual, or… the list goes on and on. In short, so many areas in our lives could be improved and made easier if we created new habits.

Getting into the habit of doing something is often easier said than done. We seem to acquire bad habits without any effort, but getting into a “good” habit can be a little more challenging. In the mastermind, we talked about how a habit is more of who you want to be, rather than what you are doing and how James Clear defines it as part of your identity.

That being said, I want to simplify the starting process into a four-step process that makes it easy to follow until we’ve internalized the new behaviour and made it a true habit – something we do automatically without having to think about, like brushing our teeth.

Decide What You Want To Do

The first step is to decide what you want that new habit to be. Be as specific as possible. Don’t just tell yourself you want to exercise more. Instead, say something like “I will go for a 30-minute walk every single day”. Clarity and definition of your new habit will make committing to it that much easier. Especially when you break it down to how you are going to do it.

Take pride in this new habit.

If you are proud of what you are doing, you will continue doing it. James said it best in his book, so I will let a snippet from the book to the talking…

“The more pride you have in a particular aspect of your identity, the more motivated you will be to maintain the habits associated with it. If you’re proud of how your hair looks, you’ll develop all sorts of habits to care for and maintain it. If you’re proud of the size of your biceps, you’ll make sure you never skip an upper-body workout. If you’re proud of the scarves you knit, you’ll be more likely to spend hours knitting each week. Once your pride gets involved, you’ll fight tooth and nail to maintain your habits.”

― James Clear

Remind Yourself To Get It Done

Once you’ve made the decision to start a new habit, especially if it is one you are proud of, the next few days should be smooth sailing. You’re motivated and excited to get this done. Right now, sticking to your new habit isn’t an issue but a few days in you’ll notice that it’s easy to slip back into old habits.

Maybe it’s raining and you don’t really want to go out and walk. Or maybe your day just gets away from you. This is when it’s important to have a daily reminder to help you keep motivated. If you have to, set an alert on your phone or even schedule the new habit to your daily to-do list for a while.

Make It Part Of Your Routine Until It Becomes A Habit

Which brings us to the last step. It takes some time before a new behavior becomes a true habit. Until then, a routine will work to your best advantage. Even before the new behavior becomes automatic, a routine will help you get it done without having to spend a lot of willpower or relying on daily reminders.

Make that daily walk part of your after dinner routine, or change from grabbing a snack at the vending machine at work at 10:00 in the morning to packing a healthy snack the night before. Find ways to make your new habit easy and for it to be harder to skip it.

I am not an expert by any means but this is my two bits on starting a new habit. Once you’ve decided to create the new habit, be proud of it, practice the routine until it’s second nature and you’ll be well on your way to improving what ever it is you are wanting to improve.

Episode 01 | Kindred Spirits & Natural Transgressions

Join us on our first episode where we talk about the STC Podcast, the ITAV Mastermind, and where and why it all began!

As we finally admit that we have never really met each other outside of zoom! And how, even though we live on opposite sides of the border and don’t hang out in the “same circles” we both felt an immediate connection.

Listen as we discuss how relationships and community can happen both organically or through hard work, and how both are great and require intention. As we provide insight into our businesses and personal relationships.

In this very first episode we touch on our flagship mastermind, It Takes A Village Solopreneur Mastermind, and how it has become a big part of our community. By using the hive-mind method, where each person that joins us is equally invested in the success of the others, our community has grown larger than we could have expected.

Two Easy to Adopt Habits for Success

Do you know what sets the uber-successful apart from the wannabe entrepreneurs?

It’s not money, brilliant ideas, or even powerful friends.

All of those things (and more) are nice to have and do tend to come with success, but they’re not a requirement for success. In my experience, what is a must-have,  is a good attitude. Without good habits and the proper mindset, you’ll constantly be battling your own brain, and that’s exhausting.

  • You will allow yourself to believe your ideas are no good
  • You will remain convinced that you aren’t smart enough
  • You will be certain that someone else did it (whatever “it” is) better

And before you know it, you’ll have talked yourself right out of launching your new program, asking for a partnership, or writing your book. In no time at all, you’ll be back at your day job, working away on someone else’s business because you don’t have the confidence to create your own.

But a simple mindset change derived from good habits can make all the difference.

Dress for Success

Ladies, this one is for you. When we work at home, it’s easy to fall into a habit of wearing sweatpants and T-shirts to the office. After all, why dress up just for the dog?

But if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to instantly shift your mindset in the right direction, ditch the yoga pants and break out the lipstick. You’ll suddenly find you feel more professional, more confident!

Approach Everything From a Place of Abundance

Too many would-be and new entrepreneurs operate with a scarcity mindset rather than approaching business from a place of abundance. Rather than telling yourself that you can’t afford to join that mastermind or attend an event, reframe your thoughts.

When the thought “I can’t afford to attend that event,” crosses your mind, stop and ask yourself, “How can I earn the money to invest in this trip?”

Keep in mind, when I say abundance, I don’t mean just a money mindset. When we approach business (and life) from a scarcity mindset, we tend to believe that in order for one person to win, another must lose. That, simply, isn’t the case.

Invest your thoughts for all parties to leave feeling they have accomplished something, making it a win-win for everyone.

By reformatting your thoughts, you’ll turn that negative talk into positive solutions that help you grow.

Important Tip For Your Next Networking Event

Thanks to the internet, the world has become a smaller space. You can now use social media to meet someone on the other side of the world and create a network with that person. Seriously, just look at Kelly and me – we are in two different countries!

This is all relatively new in the world of business – creating so many connections where having face-to-face contact was not always possible to do. Does anyone even remember the business scene in the days before the world-wide-web? I do – networking was really only at award events or trade shows.

When networking face to face was the only way to network, it was a lot easier to know the intentions of those around you.  Today people are a lot more cautious, with good reason. So, here is a quick tip for the next time you attend a networking event.

BE HONEST

You need to tell those you network with who you are and what you have to offer. And be completely transparent. If you know that there are other things on the market similar to yours, then let them know and let them know what makes your product superior to those others.

If you don’t know about similar products, then be sure you do thorough research into all aspects of what might be available and what other companies might be creating. You don’t want to get stuck looking inexperienced or unknowledgeable.

Spreading your wings and growing your business is a scary endeavour. If you do your homework and approach it with honesty and integrity, you’ll create a strong network for your business, in no time flat!

The Village’s next virtual networking night is in a few days, you should join us, we’d love to get to know you and your business better!

Do You Have a Business or a Hobby?

At last week’s meeting, we had a great conversation focusing on “Showing up for your business.” One of our members said something that surprised me.

“Everyone needs to take their business seriously, after all, it isn’t a Jobby!”

I had never heard the term “Jobby” before. When I asked about it, she explained that a “Jobby” is when people say they have a business but do not take it seriously. The company is treated less like a job and more like a hobby = “Jobby.”

See why it stuck with me?

I see it all the time: someone has decided to start their own business, so they build a website, start selling their product, and jump right in! It is excellent and brave, but it isn’t always the right thing. Online business owners can easily “open their doors for business” without a firm business plan. Some may test the waters to see if they attract any clients, and some start doing this online work as a side gig while working their full-time job.

If this is how you opened your business and now you are in elbows deep, can you tell if you have a business or if it is still just a hobby?

My first business started as a hobby; I loved taking photos of my kids. A hobby traditionally is an activity that pleases you and you do in your spare time. On the other hand, a business provides a service or products to clients, has business hours, and strives to make a profit.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine if you are working on a business or a hobby:

  • Do you have firm business hours, or are you working irregular hours as your family or full-time job allows?
  • Do you make the most of your business hours or work time by working as efficiently as possible? Or do you get distracted by social media or other behind-the-scenes tasks?
  • Do you have a business plan that includes expected profits for one year?
  • Do you make opportunities happen or wait for them to come to you?
  • Do you withdraw every penny from your account after clients pay you? Or do you give yourself a pay structure and reinvest some of your profits into software, training, or other business expenses?

If you were unsure before, you should now know if your business is indeed a business or a “Jobby.”

Do you have a business or a hobby? Woman presenting jewelry in front of ring light, live.
