Finding Success in 'A Quiet Life in 7 Steps'
Have you ever felt like you’re the only one who needs a moment of peace in a world that’s always shouting? Yeah, me too. That’s why I wanted to remind you of something that’s been a game-changer for me: embracing the power of quiet.
You know those days when you just want to curl up with a good book, or maybe binge-watch “Gilmore Girls” for the hundredth time? Those moments aren’t just about relaxation; they’re about recharging. As an introvert, I’ve learned that quiet time isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Especially after I read, A Quiet Life in Seven Steps by Susan Cain. (I talked all about it on the podcast, you can listen here)
How did I find balance as an introvert in a fast-paced world? Here are seven steps that worked for me:
- Acknowledge Your Needs: It’s okay to need quiet time. In fact, it’s essential. Think of it like charging your phone—you can’t run on empty.
- Create a Quiet Space: Whether it’s a cozy corner in your home or a peaceful spot in the park, find a place where you can just be.
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no. Feel free to decline invitations or take a rain check whenever you want. Your friends will understand, and if they don’t, well, they might not be the right friends for you.
- Embrace Solo Activities: Remember how much you loved colouring books as a kid? Or maybe it was building LEGO sets. Find activities you enjoy doing alone and make time for them.
- Use Technology Wisely: Social media can be a blessing and a curse. Use it to stay connected, but don’t let it consume your quiet time. Turn off notifications and set aside specific times for scrolling.
- Practice Mindfulness: This doesn’t have to mean meditation (though it can). It can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths or going for a walk without your phone.
- Celebrate Your Strengths: Introverts are often great listeners, deep thinkers, and creative problem solvers. Embrace those strengths and use them to your advantage, whether it’s in your career or personal life.
Finding balance can be tough, especially when it seems like everyone around you is always busy. But trust me, embracing the power of quiet has been a game-changer for me, both personally and professionally.
