When we talk about creative thinking, we’re talking about innovative problem-solving and out-of-the-box ideas. This isn’t just about creative hobbies or discussing art; it’s about pushing boundaries and coming up with novel ideas.

We’ve all heard the phrase “think outside the box.” It’s about shifting perspectives, going beyond the norm, and crafting something truly unique. That is the essence of creative thinking. It’s stepping beyond the usual mental boundaries, exploring uncharted territories, and maybe even stepping out of your comfort zone.

Think of your brain as a storage hub filled with information connected by mental paths. Regular thinking stays on the well-trodden roads, but creative thinking? It’s when you wander off, finding ideas in unexpected spots. Going off the beaten path, if you will. (I love a good metaphor)

Let’s take meal planning, for example. What is your usual routine? You resort to familiar recipes. That is thinking “inside the box.” Applying creative thinking is a lot easier than you think. Have you ever caught yourself diving into a recipe from an old “Murder She Wrote” episode? No? Just me? Hmmm – regardless, that is out-of-the-box thinking!

See the magic? Creative thinking finds inspiration everywhere. It’s about letting any encounter spark an idea.

Imagine you’ve got a new program, aiming at women who adore classic shows like Murder She Wrote. The usual approach would be Facebook ads, webinars, and email blasts. But if you think outside the box, you might involve someone from that exact audience for their insights. They won’t steer the entire campaign, but their perspective can spice things up with a unique angle and provide insight into your target audience. Like, a murder mystery meet-and-greet workshop, instead of a webinar – for example.

My point is, that this mindset of going beyond the ordinary—can transform any scenario. Start noticing it around you; creative thinking pops up everywhere when you’re on the lookout. Nurture this thinking in others—your colleagues, your team, and even your family.
